In the system of Chinese medicine the fall season is symbolized by the Metal element in nature. During the fall season temperature begins to cool down, the air gets dryer, and the Qi or energy of nature starts to decline.

These changes in the natural environment have the greatest impact upon the two organs associated with the metal element that is the lungs and the large intestine. They are both organs of absorption and release. The lungs absorb clean vital energy through breathing and the large intestine eliminates stale energy as wastes. At the same time the lungs also releases carbon dioxide (CO2) whereas the large intestine reabsorbs vital nutrients back into the body. Thus, a healthy metal energy in the body ensures the proper intake and release of life energy, nutrients, and experiences in life.

Difficulties with these two functions indicate an imbalance in the metal element. Common health disorders that can be aggravated during the fall season include allergies, asthma, breathing disorders, constipation, pain and stiffness of the joints, and tightness of the neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles.

Ask your practitioner of Chinese medicine and acupuncture about how to adjust your body’s energy to the changes of the fall season through acupuncture treatment, Chinese herbs, nutrition, Qigong exercises, and life style modifications.
