serve to direct the action of the other herbs in the formula to the targeted area, and help to blend and harmonize the effects of the other ingredients in the formula.
The process of compounding Chinese herbal formulas is a complex science and art that takes many years of study to learn and many more years of practical experience to master. However, the compounding of Chinese herbs is always in keeping with the principle of creating a formula that promotes balance and supports the natural resistance of the body to disease, thus enabling the body to heal itself.
Most Chinese herbal formulas are manufactured in the United States in FDA-certified GMP facilities. Lately, there have been some legitimate concerns about the contamination of herbs manufactured in China, especially in relation to heavy metals. While this issue was a concern due mainly to pollution from leaded gasoline, current supplies of herbs from China and most other countries have very low levels of metals and meet the World Health Organization standards. A good number of herbs and nutritional supplements are routinely tested for potency, heavy metals, bacteria, microbes, and pesticides.
At our practice, we also use specific nutritional supplements that have been proven effective to address specific health imbalances and alleviate symptoms of disease. In some instances, nutrients can be effective to unblock specific metabolic pathways and support the body’s physiologic functions. At our center, we only use and recommend whole-food based nutritional supplements. Nutritional supplements can be implemented to support the following functions:
1. Digestion: Good digestion is the physiologic foundation of good health and the center of metabolism. Supporting digestion is of paramount importance to ensure that the body is capable of assimilating and actually utilizing other nutrients, supplements or herbs. The state of the digestive capacity is the single most important physiologic factor in determining the outcome of a nutritional program. Digestive herbs and supplements help to activate the enzyme systems to improve the breaking down and assimilation of vital nutrients, thus supporting digestion, energy level, metabolism. and immune system.
2. Acid / alkaline balance: Enzymes systems, digestion, and most vital physiologic functions can only take place effectively in the proper pH levels. Plant nutrients (phytonutrients) and other nutritional supplements that contain green pigments, essential fatty acids, and alkaline forming elements can support the proper acid / alkaline levels in the tissues. They are also rich in antioxidants that further contribute to transport oxygen into the cells and balance the pH of the body.
3. Deficiencies: Supplying for specific deficiencies of vital nutrients, such as trace elements, minerals, vitamins, protein and fatty acids, essential elements necessary for a healthy body and strong immune system.
4. Detoxification: Improving the natural detoxification pathways, drainage and elimination systems of the body, including the liver, large intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, skin, kidneys and urinary bladder.
5. Organ function: use of whole-food based nutrients that have been shown to help support specific functions of the internal organs, for instance lotus root and radish for the lung function, or dandelion and pickles for liver health.
6. Symptom relief: Nutrients that have specific action in alleviating particular symptoms of a disease, like for example the use of saw palmetto berry for prostate troubles or black pepper for indigestion.
